March 31, 2008 Colonial Families o Family was an economic unit and agriculture was the means of livelihood o Unlike in traditional Europe, kids were not sent away from their families o Fathers were the legal property owners and he owned everything (wife, slaves, kids, house) and he could rule the family anyway he wanted o Men were seen as the rational ones and woman were seen as more nurturing o Not allowed to live alone if you were single o In terms of dating, marriages were based on compatibility and were not arranged o If you lived outside of the village, church was your big chance to meet someone.
