I. Civil War and Red Terror During the civil war a great number of former Russian satellites broke away from Russia including Finland, Poland, Ukraine, Georgia and the Balkan States. The Civil war was the formative experience of the Soviet Union. In order to put the people in their place behind the government, the government moved to terror methods known as the red terror. Both the Whites and the Reds used terror tactics, the Whites even persecuted Jews through the former “Pogroms.” In the early months of 1918 a member of the Left SR attempted to assassinate Lenin. Her name was Fania Kaplan. She shot Lenin 2x. The Bolsheviks looked back to Robespierre and their terror methods during the French Revolution. The secret police force was known as the “Cheka” which over time evolved into the KGB. “Red terror is not an empty phrase, there is no mercy for enemies of the revolution” was uttered by Fania Kaplan’s executioner. “enemies of the revolution” who were lucky enough to survive, were placed
