English 1022 Mr. Michael Nesset “Those Winter Sundays” Prep Sheet I. Words Blueback – No definition found in dictionary. No other words unknown. II. General Statements Those Winter Sundays, written by Robert Hayden, describes the speaker’s childhood memories while he lay in his bed, listening to his father chopping wood for the fireplace. The speaker reminisces about the thanklessness that he showed toward his father and remembered how he questioned whether his father actually loved him. Looking back, the speaker realizes that love was given to him by his father from the small deeds that he did, i.e. making “fires blaze” (Line 5) and “polished my good shoes” (Line 12). III. Sub-topics What is the relationship between the father and son? The son is looking back at his relationship with his father when he was a child. He realizes that his father truly did love him by the same deeds that he did for him. Why does the son act “indifferent” (Line 10) to his father?
