Matt Hudson 10-31-04 Honors English 10 Persuasive Essay “An average American sees over 5,000 advertisements a day,” (The Effects 1). Many people do not think that they are paying attention to the commercials. Why then do companies spend billions of dollars on advertising? Branding. Even while not paying attention to the commercial the connection to the product is there in the mind. Companies use branding so when noticing an item, people get the urge to buy it. Many times teens follow each other in buying trends. Teen advertising is the largest area that companies spend their money on. These advertisements also have negative effects on teens. When teens see someone they want to be like, smoking a cigarette, they have the pressure to also smoke, so they can be just like them. Because of this high immersion in advertisements, there is no wonder so many teens are influenced by advertisements. Branding represents the distinctive icon of a product which links a symbol to the product. “44% of K-12 graders have a TV in their bedroom,” (Wired 1). “An average American sees over 5,000 ads a day,” (The Effects 1). Ads are everywhere, ranging from TV, computer websites, newspapers, billboards and on products themselves. Almost everywhere there is some form of advertisement. What happens when people see this many ads? By watching these ads so many times, the brain forms a connection to that product. When looking at a product in the store, the brain immediately flashes back to the product that was on TV, the advertiser hopes that the consumer will have the urge to buy it. This is called impulse buying. Often times the brain can link an object to the product by something so simple as one letter or a symbol. When asked which company
