Hudson 1 Matt Hudson Mr. Richard W. Knobel, Sr. English 1021.20 October 31, 2007 Why We Are Drowning Every year, we hear of countless hurricanes coming ashore along the coasts of the United States, racking up damage in the billions of dollars. There is a great migration going on in the United States. More and more people are moving to coastal areas, especially Florida’s coasts, and then building ever larger houses. Each year, hurricanes bombard the coasts and cause catastrophic damage. The total damage has been meticulously recorded and documented by year, allowing one to compare the damage inflicted by year. The best example of the increase in storm damage is in the Florida’s coastal area. In 1947, a category four intensity hurricane hit the Fort Lauderdale coastal area of Florida. The aftermath of this storm was a mere $775 million in damage. 45 years later, Hurricane Andrew, a hurricane of comparable size and intensity to the 1947 storm, hit the Fort Lauderdale coastal area for a second time. This time, the storm caused $37 billion in damage, 47 times the damage compared to the storm in 1947 (Easterbrook 1). There is only one plausible outcome from this comparison: as more people move to the coasts of Florida and continue to build bigger and more expensive houses, the inexplicable result is that damage by hurricanes will only increase to unfathomable
