Dr. McMahon and class, The role of nurse practitioner was first created in 1965 and has evolved immeasurably over the next 50 years. In many states the role of the nurse practitioner is autonomous and they focus on managing health conditions and preventing diseases in their patients. Nurse practitioners are found in many healthcare settings including clinics, hospitals, emergency rooms, private practices, schools, and public health departments. Mary would like to stay working with directly with patients and also work in a large hospital system. Hospital medicine is a growing field with an increasing call for additional healthcare providers (Spychalla, Heathman, Pearson, Herber, & Newman, 2014). Nurse practitioners can work in the hospital environment as hospitalists or see patients as inpatients as part of a practice.
