Running Header: Unit 8 Assignment: A Day in the Life
This assignment is a case study through “A Day in the Life” of a healthcare professional,
where a patient has just left the office after having an outpatient surgery procedure. As you get
ready to put away the patient’s file, you recognize that the patient has forgotten to take his
prescriptions and after-care instructions sheets home with him. It is vital for proper healing and
recovery for the patient to have these documents. You know you will have to contact this patient
so you look inside for his contact information and signed HIPAA Release of information form.
I am legally permitted to view the patient’s medical information under HIPAA because he
is my patient. Consequently, I am also responsible for his wellness and recovery, but I will have
to be very careful by the time that I will have to contact him (Caldwell & Conner, 2014). I will
also have to make sure in when contacting him that I am speaking to him or someone that has his
permission about his medical care.
After contacting the patient to let him know about the paperwork left behind. I would
protect the information by: asking who is picking it up if not himself and when they will be
picking up the paperwork. Until then, I would let the receptionist know that Mr. Smith will be
coming to pick up some paperwork and to let me know when he gets here. While waiting for him
