Unformatted text preview: ME 260 Homework #2 MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES Due on February 20, 2007 Dr. B. Zhang (Instructor) Office Hours 8:00-10:00 (Mon &Wed) UTE Building, Room 384 and by appointment Phone: 486-2072 zhang@engr.uconn.edu 1. Two identical strain gages are mounted on a constant-moment beam as shown in Fig. 1(a). They are connected into a Wheatstone bridge as shown in Fig. 1(b). With no load on the beam the bridge is nulled with all arms having equal resistances. When the loads are applied, a bridge output of 650 V is measured. Determine the gage factor for the gages on the basis of the following additional data: 2 6 / 10 7 . 29 in lbf E = , Poissons ratio 3 . = , and the gage nominal resistance is 120 . Fig. 1 Detail of arrangement described in Problem 1. Solution: This is a four-bending system, we have lbf R R 50 2 1 = = The bending moment between R 1 and R 2 is constant: in lbf M M M = = = = 500 10 50 2 1 I Mc = , 12 3 wt I = , 2 t c = , in w 5 . 1 = , in t 75 . = psi wt M wt...
