Simplifying Expressions 1 Simplifying Expressions Devin Glover MAT221: Introduction to Algebra Professor Hatshepsitu Tull September 2, 2012
Simplifying Expressions 2 Simplifying Expressions In this week’s assignment I explored simplifying expressions. These problems represent the distributive, commutative, and associative properties, and are the type of mathematical equations that I will see in future math classes. Knowing how to properly solve these equations will help me in my future math classes, but could also help in some scientific based classes as well. The following problem starts out with me using the distributive property for the first step: 1.) 2a(a – 5) + 4(a – 5) I used distribution in this step; multiplied the coefficient by the values within the parenthesis; same with 4 on the opp. side 2a 2 – 10a + 4a-20 The previous step caused for me to remove the parenthesis . In this step I combined like terms .
