Your Name 1 Your Name Professor’s name Class Name Date Assignment is Due Life of Pi The life of Pi is a novel written by Yann Martel. It is a story that one character in the book suggests, “will make you believe in God” (Martel 3). Before the first chapter, the Author’s note starts autobiographically suggesting that the author travels to India in search for inspiration. The Authors note serves more purpose in the story than a mere introduction, acknowledgement, or foreword. It puts the reader in a position to believe the story as the establishment of the setting takes place in real places. For instance, the Pondicherry town and the coffee house where the author meets Francis Adirubasamy exist in the formerly French territory of South India. The same case applies to the Trivandrum Zoo, which is across the road from the coffee shop (Martel 3). The Botanical gardens exist but the Pondicherry Zoo does not exist. Additionally, in the acknowledgement he includes characters such as Mr. Francis Adirubasamy and Mr. Patel and introduces as real people. He recognizes the characters along with the Canadian Council for the
Your Name 2 Arts, which is a real organization that provided him with support in writing the novel. The author uses such a technique that involves mixing actuality and invention ensures the readers imaginations not sacrificed on the altar of reality (Yoni 9). Francis Adirubasamy refers the author to Piscine Molitor Patel for a story that will make him believe in the existence of God. Piscine lives in Toronto Canada. The novel sets stage with Piscine’s account of a boy popularly known as Pi. He is the son of a zookeeper in Pondicherry India. The young boy has an encyclopedic knowledge regarding the animals’ world mainly because all his life he has lived with wild animals. He portrays high intelligence and curiosity which makes him leap from Hinduism then to Christianity and finally to Islam. He practices all the three religions with an open mind as well as joyous abandon (Yoni 7). When Pi reaches 16 years of age, his family sets sail to start a new life in Canada. They sell most of the animals but carry a few with them in the ship. Tragically, the boat sinks into the Pacific Ocean before it reaches Midway Island. Pi survives by clinging to a life raft. On the life raft he has a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan and a 450 pound Bengal tiger known as Richard Parker as his companion. The vicious tiger dispatches all the animals. Pi uses his wits, knowledge, and faith to survive for 227 days on the 26-foot raft with Richard Parker and the ocean as his only companion. The story becomes engaging because of the young narrators sharp observations. The authors unbelievable plotline pull down the readers defenses as the scenes flow effort leading to the biggest ordeal in young Pi’s life (Goldberg 9). The story revolves around how Pi managed to survive the psychological, physical, and intellectual challenges
