Musc 395 March 3, 2008 Ladysmith Black Mombazo I had heard of Ladysmith Black Mombazo before but wasn’t sure if I had heard any of  their music.  Found out I actually had heard some of their stuff.  In picking up and reading the  program I found out a lot about the history of the group.  The group has been together since the  late 1950’s and was started by a man named Joseph Shabalala.  The group consists of eight  men, several of its original members, and all four of Joseph’s sons, as he calls them the new  generation of Mombazo.  The traditional music sung by them is called Isicathamiya.  The name  Ladysmith Black Mombazo comes from the grouping of several things.  Ladysmith form the  Shabalala’s home town, Black refers to the black oxen, and Mombazo is the Zulu word for ax.
