Under HIPAA, are you legally allowed to view this patient’s medical information? Why or why not?

Yes, under HIPAA we are legally allowed to view the patients information because it is in the
best interest of the patient. By doing so we are assuring the customer has all of the tools they
need to make a speedy recovery.
In this case, how would you be able to correct your error and provide the missing documents
and instructions to the patient while still protecting patient confidentiality under HIPAA?

I would let the caring physician know that the patient left this information at the office and see
if the physician can contact the patient instead of myself.
