August Coup: This occurred in August of 1991 when a group of Soviet Government officials banded together to depose Gorbachev and take control of the country. They were hard-line members. They protested that the reforms were too radical and that it decentralized central power to the republics too much. Although it was an unsuccesful coup, it ended Gorbachev's hopes of keeping the Union together. Gorbachev's Parastroika and Glasnost made hard-liners angry. By August 22, the traditional Russian Flag was back. By the 24th, the CCCP was crashing and nations were declaring their independence. Brat "Brother": Movie that focuses on a man who was a gangster in 1990's Russia. It portrayed things such as Russian attitudes towards Westerners and Americans during this time (hostility and anger, threats for the future.) It also displayed how people were having difficult time getting products that were now available because of the lack of money as well as severe inflation. It also displays how people involved in the military utilized their training for crime, which also mirrirs how KGB officials became very powerful after the breakdown of the union. Its portrayal of St. Pete's slums and neighborhoods was also praised. He pursued a criminal life because there was no other direction in Russia. The Character Kat displays Western Culture thriving in the new culture such as western music, drugs, and McDonalds. Leonid Brezhnev: Leader of the Soviet Union from 1964-1982. He represented the first generation to grow up and only have concious memories of Soviet Russia, nothing from Pre- Soviet society. He was Kruschev's protege after they met in 1931 and worked together during WWII. He became a full member of the Politburo after he helped defeat the Old Gaurd in the late 1950's. He suppported De-Stalinization. He was in charge during the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Relations with China under Brezhnev continued to deteriorate. In order to make sure not to be ganged up on by the Chinese, he opened up US negotiations and worked with Nixon in 1972 in order to sign SALT I and begin the detente era. The economy was becoming stagnant in 1970's Russia, which made things difficult for Brezhnev. Collectivization got rid of private peasants and the Union was increasingly unable to gain the agriculture it needed to feed peopel in the cities and to match demand. Also, the arms race as well as space program hurt the economy as well. Increasing corruption also made it difficult for Brezhnev. His cult of personality grew in the 1970's, and was awarded 114 medals. His cult was seen as hollow and cynical however. Civil Society: Rights conciousness that people develope. Worker's solidarity movement in Poland is an example. Any kind of formation of people who understand their rights and implement them by forming a group, PeTA, etc. Khrushchev's Thaw saw a growth in civil society and widespreadduring glasnost. Cold War:
