Ch 50 50.1 Organisms are open systems Ecology – organism interaction with the environment o Determines distribution and abundance of organisms Ecological time – (minutes, months, years) Evolutionary time – (decades, centuries, millennia) Abiotic factors - non-living (temp. water, light, nutrients) Organismal Ecology – organisms structure, physiology, and behavior meet challenges posed by the environment ……. .Subdivided into: o Physiological ecology o Evolutionary o Behavioral Population – group of individuals of the same species living in a particular area Community – all the organisms of all species that inhabit a particular area. Area focuses on predation, competition and disease as well as Abiotic factors that affect comm. Structure. Ecosystem – all the Abiotic factors in addition to the entire community of species that exist in a certain area. Its ecology focuses on energy flow and chemical cycling. Landscape Ecology
