Unformatted text preview: The Spectrochemical Series 11/23/07 Purpose: To measure wavelength absorbance of 5 unknown cobalt complexes, and thus determine their identities based on the spectrochemical series. The Spectrochemical Series Br- < Cl- < F- < H 2 O < NH 3 (The above ligands are relevant to this experiment, and are arranged in order of increasing crystal field splitting, relative to a constant transition metal ion.) Synthesis and Purification of ‘Complex B’ The objective of this lab was to measure the absorbance spectrum of Complexes A, B, C, D, and E. My particular group was set to synthesize Complex B. In a series of reactions involving a cobalt salt, ammonium chloride, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, and activated charcoal, Complex B in the form of a ruddy brown precipitate was isolated and left to dry. A week later, this crude solid was purified in hot HCl and was ready to be analyzed via spectrometer. solid was purified in hot HCl and was ready to be analyzed via spectrometer....
