Purpose:  To measure wavelength absorbance of 5 unknown cobalt complexes, and thus  determine their identities based on the spectrochemical series. The Spectrochemical Series  Br -  < Cl -  < F -  < H 2 O < NH 3 (The above ligands are relevant to this experiment, and are arranged in order of  increasing crystal field splitting, relative to a constant transition metal ion.) Synthesis and Purification of ‘Complex B’ The objective of this lab was to measure the absorbance spectrum of Complexes A, B, C, D,  and E. My particular group was set to synthesize Complex B. In a series of reactions involving a  cobalt salt, ammonium chloride, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, and activated charcoal, Complex  B in the form of a ruddy brown precipitate was isolated and left to dry. A week later, this crude  solid was purified in hot HCl and was ready to be analyzed via spectrometer.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
