Puerto Rico Puerto Rico was discovered in 1493 by Columbus on his 2 nd voyage to the New World. This island has been in jeopardy for practically all of its founding years. The island was in the possession of Spain for the better part of 400 years until 1898. In 1898, the United States and Spain signed the treaty of Paris, which ended the Spanish- American War and ceded all of the Spanish islands to the United States. These islands included the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico hasn’t exactly been treated with the fairness compared to the other two islands acquired in the treaty. Both the Philippines and Cuba were granted their independence, but Puerto Rico has been controlled by the United States ever since 1898. In 1952, Puerto Rico was named a commonwealth of the United States. In my opinion, by looking at all of the options, I believe that Puerto Rico should be granted its freedom from the United States. Why should Puerto Rico be treated any different than the Philippines and Cuba? Some might say that if the United States were to grant Puerto Rico its freedom then the country would surely be doomed economically and politically, but what ever happened to the Philippines and Cuba? These two are still countries and they were not labeled as doomed. If freed, Puerto Rico would already
