Pictures At A Scientific Exhibition “He reaches in and grabs the tail of a…big male with black-and-white blotches over its body. He walks over to the sink holding the rat by its tail. You whirl it three times says Owl, and on the third time, you smash its head against the sink like this. Schmeck. The sound of smashing cartilage and splintering bone” (190). This seems like a gruesome act and for what horrific explanation would someone have to do this? Some may say that this is cruelty to animals, but if a scientist is brought into the conversation he or she will say it is solely for the pursuit of knowledge. The author Jordan has enrolled in a physiology laboratory at her current university. She did not know what she was getting herself into. The course was mainly dependant on getting two points across to the students: separate oneself from any emotional ties to life and to realize that subjects involved in conducting tests have no real importance to anyone. These would almost have to be realized through all of the
