Chapter 13 - Lives of men are greatly influenced, altered, or often driven by “Great changes” that are beyond their control but effect their actions and thoughts whether they know it or not. - These changes and influences are so great that they make a man/woman feel lost and powerless. - But not all men are ordinary. Some can occupy a position in society in which they look down upon other men or whose words, decisions, and actions can greatly affect those other men and women. The Elite group of men: Ex/ Politicians, Government officials, the president, CEO’s, Judges, Mayors, Police officers, etc. - THE POWER ELITE: composed of men and women whose thoughts, decisions, and actions have major consequences. Their positions enable them to surpass the common settings of common men and women. It is not so much what they do or do not do, but the position and title that they hold or occupy that grants them such power and influence of the ordinary man. - Usually these men are in command of great hierarchies, organizations of modern society, big-time corporations, run states, direct the military establishment, etc. They occupy the command posts of the social structure. - Their failure to act or make a decision usually has greater consequences than the decisions they do make. - THE POWER ELITE are not solitary rulers, but have advisers, consultants, spokesmen and opinion-makers to help them establish a decision. Directly below the POWE ELITE are the people of the middle levels of power, such as the Congress. - The middle class level of power consist of professional celebrities who live by being continually displayed, but are never, so long as they remain celebrities, displayed enough. Through these players, the drama of the elite is enacted. But that drama is centered in the command posts of the major institutional hierarchies. -
