Adam Crabtree Psych 260 Professor Van Kirk Question: Why are there numerous neurotransmitters instead of one universal neurotransmitter to regulate behavior and mental processes? Numerous neurotransmitters are required because the receptors with which they bind to signal a different response that must be transmitted to certain behaviors and mental processes. Each different neurotransmitter is composed of ligands that fit into receptors and open ion channels similar to a lock and key. If there was on universal neurotransmitter for all different mental processes the neurotransmitter would require ligand's that were able to bind to every different receptor on the neuron. Also, the amount of different chemicals required to create different mental processes in the nervous system is impossible to combine them all into one due to chemical properties. Neurotransmitters have two responses to activate receptors: ionotropic and metabatropic. Ionotropic is a direct fast acting response, that once the neurotransmitter
