Planaria Phototaxis Experiment Report Zoology Lab, Wed. 3:00-6:00 Introduction In this experiment, Planaria were tested to determine if they would exhibit a positive or negative phototaxic reaction to a direct light source. If the Planaria moved away from the light, it was a negative reaction, and vice-versa. The hypothesis of the entire class was that most of the Planaria would react negatively to the source of light. The experiment successfully proved the hypothesis. Most of the Planaria moved away from the source of light. Methods and Materials The materials that were used in the experiment were a piece of cardboard cut into the shape of a half circle, a petri dish, a piece of paper, a light source, spring water, and five of the animals being studied, Planaria . The petri dish was filled about half-full with spring water, and then five living Planaria were deposited into the dish. The petri dishes were then placed underneath a light source on top of a white piece of paper. Our light came from the light hoods on our lab tables. The lights were turned off in the lab, and they were left off for about five minutes to allow the Planaria to adjust to the darkness. The half circle of cardboard, which covered approximately half of the petri dish, was then placed on top of the dish. The light hoods were then turned on, and the movement of the Planaria was recorded. After a couple of minutes passed, the lights were turned off and the 1
