IV. Changes in women’s lives A. Economic Changes i. Women are likely to not be working off their families farm because of a lack of opportunity ii. the traditional farm has a female sphere and a male sphere, as the farm is shrinking, the male role may be shrinking with it. iii. the plowing that the men go out to do are roles that women can do also 1. they are not hired for these jobs because it is not socially acceptable for the family that has a daughter doing male work, it makes them seem desperate for money iv. If a couple meet it is likely that they are both working, but if one quits working it is likely to be the woman because the man makes more money anyway. 1. women’s work pays less than man’s work v. so the husband and sons are hired out because they will bring more money in vi. women are beginning to specialize and trade a surplus of a commodity 1. this is particularly prominent in the clothing industry 2. this is known as the “female domestic economy” vii. how does this effect women within the household
