Through fiction, poetry, film, and drama, we willexaminethe tradition of ghostly storytelling, and we will analyze how such stories have evolved over the courseof human history and geography.From ancient Babylon, through Gothic Europe, to the sprawlingmetropolises of West Africa, the islands of the Caribbean, the haunted houses of Latin America and EastAsia, all the way to our present-day U.S. and our own peculiar Baton Rouge, we will encounter and followdifferent kinds of ghosts and ghouls. Why do we follow them so? What is the purpose of these stories, andwhy do they persist over the ages? How do authors utilize their ghostly characters? What do the ghosts knowthat we don’t? How do they help us and harm us as we make our waythrough this complicated world?LEARNING OUTCOMESGeneral Education courses in the humanities area provide students with an understanding of their owncultural traditions and those of other cultures, locally, nationally, and internationally; lead students to reflecton fundamental questions that human beings have faced, whatever their diverse backgrounds and cultures;and introduce students to the humanities disciplines, such as literature, history, philosophy, religious studies,and language.Integrative learning allows students to make simple connections among ideas and experiences andacross disciplines and perspectives. The LSU Integrative Learning Core (ILC) curriculum is designedto develop student abilities to transfer their learning to new situations, and demonstrate a sense ofself as a learner. A fundamental goal of the ILC is to foster students’ practical and intellectualcapacities associated with integrative learning in preparation for high competence and functionalityin their post-baccalaureate careers.
