Discussion Questions on Shelley’s Frankenstein : Part I Shelley Biography and Background Information on Frankenstein 1. Who was Mary Shelley?   Wife of Percy Shelley, but she was a good author in her own right. She was 18 when she wrote  Frakenstien.  She married Percy Shelley (who was already married) so they had to run away. His 1 st  wife  drowns herself so they marry in 1816 (she was 19 years old) Father didn’t approve of Shelley bc he was  already married and she was so young. 1818 it was published ananomsly1831 (3 rd  edition) was the first  time her name appeared on it. She also illustrated the book as well.  2. When did she live and what was going on in England at that time?  What kinds of scientific and  geographical discoveries were being made in the same general time period in which Shelley was  writing?  How do they impact the novel? A lot of science in the book. Shelley and Byron were very interested in science as well. They  would talk about it.  There was a scientist that believed could bring back dead cells. Electicity is being invented and  popularized. The poles were being explored. They wouldn’t make it though because they got stuck in  the ice and died.  The church didn’t have a strict hold on the population. But there are giant steps being made in  science so people are beginning to quesetion the validity of some of the churchs beliefs. They are  beginning to explore the universe with science in mind and not christitanity.  Alchamey was popular in this time. Trying to transfor metals into gold and trying to discover the  elixer in life. Famos philosophers were involved with this.  3. Who were her parents?  Why were they important to our cultural history? She had famous parents. Her mother was Mary Wollstonecraft who was a feminist and an  author. Her father was a philosopher Godwin. 4. When and why did Shelley write Frankenstein?  What circumstances set the stage for her decision to  compose a story?  (Hint: what friends was she with -- and where?) The story came about when she spent the summer with her husband and Byron had a contest on  who could write the scariest novel. She came up with the idea after a ‘semi-conscious’ dream. They  were in Switzerland at Lake Genova
