Basic material, Japanese religion, continued Early Shint ō Shinto affirmed this world – “life was good and beautiful; human beings had reason to be thankful for their lot in the world” (Kitagawa). Themes : Celebration of seasons, fertility, prosperity, deliverance from calamity. Pollutants – death, blood, sickness. Need for purification Lacking an ethical system or theology as found in more “sophisticated” religions. Where else have we noted the theme of pollution and purification? Components The story of Amaterasu (Sun Goddess) and Susanoo (1 st and 2 nd “children” of Izanagi after he purified himself) Competition to create children/incest theme Susanoo wreaks havoc, weaving maiden dies Prevents Amaterasu from dedicating the rice harvest Amaterasu goes into cave, world becomes dark Lured out by gods (Goddess Uzume’s erotic dance)
