Bordetella Pertussis • Gram Negative; approximately .8µm by .04µm; rod shaped; encapsulated; does not produce spores. • Non-motile, strict aerobe. • Most commonly known as the causative agent behind Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough. • The bacterium can be destroyed by the DTaP vaccine, which resulted in less than 30 American children dying in 2000, as opposed to 297,000 worldwide.
