England was well equipped with all of the “fancies” of dress, while the newborn America was not at first. The colonies were just being set up, so clothing was very utilitarian in comparison to England. It was plain for a while, until more permanent structures were built. Invoices from cargo shipments tell us that nice fabrics and fashionable items began to be shipped over the water after some time. 5. Compare scholars’ opinions about children’s dress in your textbook and explain which view you find most convincing and why. The view that paintings are the best form of information makes the most sense.
