The Final Description of the Final Paper and Final (and that’s final) After further reflection, I concluded that it would be unfair to ask you to make personal decisions about taking a final exam. I’m making this change, therefore, in hopes of resolving possible dilemmas and substituting an assignment that may be more satisfactory to you. I’ve decided to roll elements of a final exam into the final paper. There will be no final exam as such on May 6. Instead, you’re asked to write a final paper that is a somewhat revised version of the final paper I’ve described in class. The following are its guidelines: First, the background. The course addresses the subject of Roman Catholicism in the modern world. That assumes two factors – one, that Catholicism is always changing in large part because of its surroundings (the trends of wider society are brought into the church); and, two, that the official church opposes some of those trends, tries to find ways to interpret them so they fit within Catholic tradition (democracy, eventually) or accepts
