Tade Ade-Turton PSC 225 British Politics 3/14/08 “Assess the impact of the media on political activity in Britain” The Media plays an important role in many aspects of British Politics. Whether it be negative or positive, the media can decide whether a candidate is victorious or defeated. Politicians must be constantly aware of the media and how their actions, or words can be perceived. Poor choices in words and behavior can cost a British politician, their career. Politicians have adapted to the importance of positive media coverage and go to great lengths to make sure the media promotes a positive image of them and their politics. Politicians are now proactive in this matter and have begun to hire media experts and spin doctors. Another impact of the media in British politics is the degree to which the media covers politics in Britain. The mass coverage of a politician whether negative or positive greatly influences the public that gets much of their information from the media. Positive media is the passage way to political success in Britain. The ability to be positively portrayed is important in any public endeavor, especially in politics. Tony Blair is an excellent example of the success that can be attained as a result of a well managed media profile. Before he even began as Prime Minister, Blair understood the importance the media played in politics and thus hired former media member Alistair Campbell. Campbell who worked for British newspapers such as the Mirror and the Today , was well versed in the inner workings of the media. As a member of Blair’s Labour party, his job title as Press Secretary and Director of Communication and Strategy greatly understate his importance to Tony Blair. Alistair’s expertise regarding media relations was invaluable to Tony Blair, and Alistair became one of
