Hist206 – Exam 1 ° Douglas won election but not popular vote. Why the split? Because of slavery - Mexican war American victory and gained California, modern day Arizona, half of Nevada and Texas, New Mexico. o The question becomes: what happens to that new territory? That land gets admitted as individual states but do they are admitted as free or slave states? Previously there was a balance of the number of states. Lincoln did not favor abolitionist, but he said slavery should not expand. It could exist where it existed Californiarichest most fertile landhow it becomes admitted into the union is crucialfree state. o Douglas believed eligible voters in the territory should decide for themselves o Breckinridge argued that slavery should expand wherever it should be. After election of 1860 , 1 by 1 the slave states began to secede. (7 southern states before Lincoln was aunigated and 4 after) they believed that no slave expansion was a violation of their liberty. They felt they could move their property (slaves) wherever they chose. 5 slave states did not secede: Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Missouri, Kentucky April of 1861 : civil war began . o Lincoln predicted that this would be a short war, that he was misunderstood, and that the states of rebellion would see that he did not pose a threat. ……. BUT it was deadliest/bloodiest war. o 1/15 Americans were killed or wounded. Throughout the war, Lincoln was still questioning where he stood about slavery. o In Aug. of 1861, he wrote to Porris Greeley, saying the most important thing to him was the preservation of the union. It was his top priority. o Lincoln shorty after issues the emancipation proclamation: Those who are slaves will be emancipated but only in the states of rebellion. He felt it was importantly symbolic: from being wishy- washy about slavery to being about emancipation because he believed the war needed a meaning. ° -America’s first major export was from southern cotton plantations.
