1 English Composition II April 24, 2007 When Dating Goes Wrong: Understanding Date Rape and Preventing it Research has shown that the likelihood of a woman to be a victim of date rape, also know as acquaintance rape, is amplified while attending college; unfortunately, the numbers of date rapes are steadily increasing. Some of the major causes for this are the ambiguous definition of what acquaintance rape really is and the availability, potency of date rape drugs. However, there are some simple solutions that maybe able to get this problem under control: holding seminars that let people know exactly what date rape is, stricter laws and enforcement for offenders, and better control over drugs that can be used to incapacitate victims. The problems that occur with date rape will be discussed first, followed by possible solutions. The issues with acquaintance rape may seem straightforward, but it actually is not as obvious as it seems. In truth, most crimes of date rape go unreported due in large part to the fact that both perpetrators and victims often fail to characterize their experiences as rape (Kline 1). On many occasions, a victim will be asked if she were raped, which she would answer no; however, when asked if she had ever been forced to have sex, her answer soon changes (Ebony 1). Being forced to have sex may automatically register as rape in some people minds; however, when put in certain situations it can be unclear that a crime has actually taken place. A woman may have agreed to go on a date with her attacker or they could have been in a relationship with one another. If she is forced to have sex, then she has been raped; however, she may not think she has been raped because she willingly had gone out with him and she may have previously been intimate with him (Ebony 1). Furthermore, she may blame herself for the encounter, causing her

2 to not report what happened (Ebony 1). Until recent years, the victims and the perpetrators were not the only ones that did not recognize date rape as a true rape (Kline 3). Unfortunately, many law enforcement officials did not see acquaintance rape as a crime, so she may have been turned away or treated as a criminal herself if she decided to report the experience (Ebony 2). Now that the issue of the identifying date rape as a crime this essay will now move on to the next problem. Sometimes the attackers know what they are planning to do is rape, which is the case when date rape drugs are involved. Date rape drugs are often used to incapacitate someone.
