1 English Composition I November 07, 2006 Should the U.S. Government be at War with the Middle East? The war in Iraq is an extremely controversial topic not only in the United States, but all over the world. Some people think that it was a good idea for the U.S. to be overseas and that the presence of our soldiers is improving the lives of many in the Middle East. However, it is a more popular thought that soldiers should not have been there in the first place. The opposing views in this essay: the American government is showing Middle Eastern governments how to use politics instead of violence to solve differences and our presence in the Middle East is helping the United States make new friends among our Middle Eastern enemies. These view will be opposing the belief that this war is a modern version of Manifest Destiny and the government has not been truthful about there reasons for being in Iraq. The first view is the belief that American government is teaching Middle Eastern governments to use politics instead of violence to resolve differences. This will be followed be the contrasting idea, which is that this war is a modern version of Manifest Destiny. For centuries, the Middle East has been a place where violence is the answer to most issues. Where minor crimes are punished with death and fear is used by the rulers to control their people, especially women. A woman was severely beaten for showing her ankles and wrist. This is still true in many of the countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia. However, creating the Iraqi Interim Government demonstrates to the Middle Eastern people that there is a better way to settle quarrels, and it is better for the people in general. “Instead of fighting to settle their land and oil disputes,” informs a private source, “they can make treaties. Eventually, they’ll become allies with one another,
