David White MWF 1:00 Concert Review #1 AU Jazz Ensemble Spring Concert, 4/16/08 The first work performed was “Take the A Train” by Billy Strayhorn. It was an upbeat, simple piece with a moderate tempo which remained constant throughout the piece. The song opens with a guitar solo while the base guitar and drums provided a steady accompaniment. It was very laid back and made me feel exactly like the title of the song. Like I am sitting on a train, just watching the scenery as it passes by without a worry in the world. This piece kept the same feel throughout the whole song. The opening melody also returns towards the end of the song. The peace selected was a perfect opening piece because it a fun song which set the stage for a great and very entertaining performance to follow. The next ensemble that was played was “Corcovado” by Antonio Carlos Jobim. The tempo in this piece, like the first, was very moderate throughout the entire song. This song was very calm and soothing to listen to and it made you feel as if you were dining in a very high class restaurant. The song opened with two solos played by both a baritone and a saxophone. Base Guitar and the drums kept a steady beat while the two exchanged their different solos. What was neat about the song was at times the two soloists would echo each other which made for a very neat
