Textual Analysis: Hermes in The Iliad, Book XXIV. 332-468,677-697 (Longman Anthology) By David White Thesis Statement: Hermes is the god of messengers, but he is also portrayed as being a comforting mortal companion to Priam in his time of need. Zeus took pity on Priam and sent his son Hermes to safely guide the king through the camp of the Achaeans. Without any hesitation Hermes obeys. “Immediately he bound his sandals to his feet and took his staff” (340). Hermes then descended Mount Olympus heading towards Troy. Upon arrival at the camp Hermes casts a spell of sleep on the Achaeans. Once in the camp he leads Priam to the camp of Achilles and opens the gates. (457) This is when Hermes revealed his true self to Priam and advises him on how to ask Achilles for the return of his son Hektors body. Hermes then disappears into thin air leaving Priam to consult with Achilles. As dawn began to approach Hermes returned to Priam and safely led the grieving father and his dead son Hektor back to Troy. There his family had eleven days to give a proper burial to Hektor.
