Travis Kennedy 2-19-08 Study Guide: Exam #1 An interesting thing that these poets have in common is their need to search their own identity. Things to think about when reading the poetry -who is the narrator? -are conflicts internal or external? How does the narrator project setting & place? (including not only the specific setting, but time, the characters, objects, sensory imagery, irony, critique of the environment.) -Emerson: examples of diction indicating evolution, prediction, etc. The poet is not necessarily the same person as the narrator. Concord Hymn: The recurrence of slept and sleep one following after the other is showing that the foe is peaceful and died along with the memory of this great thing, and the conqueror has lived on to see this once great and passionate scene be washed away into nothingness by the passage of time. The foe and the conqueror though different in life are now equal in death. How does this poem challenge our view of war? I think it shows how war is such a powerful force and the meaning that it fills men with when they are laying down their lives for something they believe in. The end of the poem pleads that the conflict of their lives would not be reflected in the lives of their children and grandchildren. As time passes, what will we think of our heroes? The suggestion is that the enemies and those who fight us, as well as the people who fight for our freedom and those we support will eventually, in time, meet the same fate in death. Metaphor: compares 2 different things by saying that they area one. The inclination here in the stanza about the bridge is that time and decay or rather nothingness are one in the same. The Problem: Emerson takes 1000 words to explain what the speaker’s problem is. In two lines or three if you had to write down what the problem is, what would it be? It seems like the author is overwhelmed in a way by all of the power of the church as an institution, and is feeling more spiritual about nature and the world around him than he does about the church as an institution. He may perhaps even have been calling for a return to a simpler more existential attitude toward the church and religion in general.

The cowl could be a symbol for shrouding of the eyes as indicating that one is not being true to one’s self. *Transcendental ideology Phillis Wheatley: Phillis Wheatley was kidnapped from her African village and sold to a family in Boston named the Wheatleys. They taught her to read and speak English to see if a “barbarian” would be able to learn like a “normal person”. Her first book of poetry was published in London. -To the University of Cambridge, In New-England : -What might a reader ask himself about what Wheatley is doing? What is the poem about? In one way, in the second stanza, she is prompting young people to value their educations and to take advantage of the opportunities that come with it.
