Assignment 8 1. A) What is the force behind all mass wasting? Gravity is the force behind all mass wasting. B) Define creep. Creep is the slow process of soil quietly deforming due to the consistent pull of gravity. C) List 3 things that cause the ground surface to swell and shrink. 3 things that cause the ground surface to swell are when water filling the pores in soil freezes, it expands and swells the soil, when soil rich in expandable materials absorbs water and expands, and when heating by the sun causes an increase in the volume of soil. 3 things that cause the ground surface to shrink are when soil thaws, dries, or cools. 2. A) List the external causes of slope failures. The external causes of slope failures are adding mass high on a slope through sediment deposition, steepening the slope by fault movements, and removing support from low on the slope through erosion. B) List the internal causes of slope failures. The internal causes of slope failures are inherently weak materials, water in different roles, decreasing cohesion, and adverse geologic structures. 3. A) What type of material is most commonly associated with mass wasting - clay, sandstone or bedrock? Clay is the most commonly associated with mass wasting.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
