Lois Whittaker PHIL 32400-04 April 7, 2016 Topic Essay Exam 2 1.) John Stuart Mill’s describes two different type of pleasures in Utilitarianism. The two type of pleasures are higher pleasure and lower pleasure. Mills describe higher pleasure as a more rational type of pleasure that can be experience only by individuals who are in a rational state of mind. He refers to low pleasure which can be experienced by anyone. Mills prefers higher pleasure because a person would rather be rational and creative no matter how unhappy the person is in their current situation. Qualitative utilitarian’s states mental desires are different from each other and greater in value to physical ones. Qualitative utilitarian’s must consider both quality and quantity. Quantitative utilitarian’s believes that rational desires are different from physical ones when quality is concerned. 2.) According to the text, “rule-utilitarianism differs in that calls for an analysis that extends beyond the immediate circumstances. Instead, it calls for a closer look at the long term consequences that would be generated by performing the act in all relevantly similar situations.” The objection against Utilitarianism known as the doctor’s dilemma that doctor would break a rule to let his patient to use the deceased patient organs to donate it to five other patient who need them to live.
