M116: World Music Name___________________________ Study Guide: India 1. Kolkata is the city previously known as Calcutta , and is located on the [ east or west] side of India. Calcutta East 2. A major style of North Indian dance is called Kathak Dance , and is generally either abstract, called Nritta , or a pantomime of a story, called Abhinaya . 3. Indian dancers and drummers speak to each other using a special set of syllables called Bol . 4. Sangita , which generally translates as “music” more accurately means the embodiment of: rhythm in dance and the dramatic expression of story and mood through dance and song as well. Pg. 30 Chapter 2 5. Vilambit lay means slow tempo while drut lay means fast tempo. 6. Khyal is the major vocal style of Hindustani music, generally starting off very slowly and ending up very fast, lasting up to 30-40 minutes. 7. Alap is a raga improvisation in free rhythm. It generally starts off in a low range and slowly works higher, setting each pitch in its particular melodic relationship to the others.
