Ratliff 1 Zachary Ratliff Dr. John Marazita PSY 220 21 April 2016 Spanking and Child Development Corporeal punishment, especially spanking, is one of the most common punishments for parents to discipline their children, especially in the United States. However, this practice may not be the most effective or productive. In fact, it can be harmful to children. Parents typically spank their kids to punish their children’s unwanted behavior and prevent the child from acting inappropriately again. But spanking does not effectively fulfill these objectives, since it does not completely observe all the conditions for effective punishment according to behaviors, i.e. that the punishment be immediate, consistent, and given after every occurrence of the behavior. Spanking also prevents children from internalizing the rules and norms the parents want to transfer to their children. Hitting causes children to feel fear and pain, which do not lead to children’s adopting of the rules their parents want to communicate.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
