Ratliff 1 Zachary Ratliff Dr. John Marazita PSY 220.01 23 February 2016 Theory of Mind and Lying All human beings are set apart from animals by reason, and especially the ability to reason about the mental states of oneself and others. This ability is referred to as theory of mind. But does theory of mind help in the development of lying? Xiao Pan Ding et al. conducted a study where they tested the hypothesis that theory of mind holds an important role in the development of verbal deception. Furthermore, theory of mind not only facilitates the ability to lie, but increases the tendency to lie. Through a series of tests and training, three-year-olds were given theory of mind training and afterwards given opportunities to lie. The evidence supported the causal relationship between theory of mind and lying, plus provided evidence that theory of mind also increases social skills.
