Chapter 10 Industrial Revolution 1. In what ways did the Second Great Awakening (religious revivalism) reinforce or expand egalitarian ideals? (you will need to read all of section 2 to completely answer this question.) Times were changing. The Industrial Revolution. These religious changes came in response to intellectual and social currents. Life was getting harder. People needed religion to turn to. The market revolution, western expansion, and European immigration all challenged traditional bonds of authority, and evangelicalism promised equal measures of excitement and order. Revivals-swelling church membership, new Christian denominations, social reforms. Revival of the Second Great Awakening--Cane Ridge, Kentucky -people got emotional when the preachers came. Revivalists abandoned the formal style of worship. They embraced more impassioned forms of worship (jumping, shouting, gesturing) *Effecting Salvation. All men are equal in salvation and that all people can be saved by surrendering to God. Spiritual Leadership. People could work in a mill and become a preacher overnight. Protestant mainstream. Prophets claimed that God called them to establish new churches and introduce (or, in their understanding restore lost) teachings, forms of worship, and scripture. Racial Integration. Expressing equal concern for white and black people’s spiritual salvation and encouraging both slaveholders and enslaved to attend the same meetings. Social leveling. Flouting the codes of self-restraint prescribed by upper-class elites. Social and religious structure to help cope with change Moral order and spiritual solace. The Second Great Awakening armed evangelical Christians with a moral purpose to address and eradicate the many social problems they saw as arising from dramatic demographic shifts.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
