They were like uncivilized savages, digging up corpses and eating them. Generally, they were full of themselves. They thought they were superior to the Indians physically, agriculturally, and technology-wise and so felt they were entitled to land. But they did help the Indians by trading goods with them. They were unprepared. Young merchants went to Virginia 2. What was the status of Africans in Jamestown? (be careful. Don't let your preconceptions control your answer.) Englishmen saw Africans as inferior because of the Europeans’ preconceived notions. The Africans’ dark skin was said to be connected with sin. Basically, they were used to replace Native Americans in terms of labor, but they were not slaves. They had harder punishments, but eventually they became free to own land. Africans, in a way, payed off a debt they never had
