Emily Ryan English 2002 Emerson and “Self-Reliance” (537-53) 10/19/07 1. After our discussion from last time: be able to identify quotations from this text that support each of the four characteristics of Transcendentalism. 2. Give a quotation with a page number that defines how Emerson uses the word “genius.” Using Emerson’s definition of genius from “Self-Reliance,” explain how every person possesses genius. Why do so many people fail to demonstrate their capacity for genius? Emerson explains a genius on page 538 by saying, “To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men,--that is genius.” Everyone possesses genius in that everyone can believe in themselves. Emerson says that men do not demonstrate this genius because they “dismiss” their thoughts because they are their own. People rely too much on what other people think and say and don’t think for themselves. 3.
