Emily Ryan English 2020 Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” (723-27, 763-67) 10/24/07 1. In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Montresor is planning the perfect revenge. What two characteristics are essential, to Montresor’s way of thinking, in achieving the perfect revenge? (See paragraph one, and “translate” the relevant part.) Does Montresor achieve his goal? In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Montresor says that he needs to not have anything bad happen to him as a result of the revenge. Also, he says that it has to hurt the person who wronged him as much as it hurt him. Montresor does achieve his goal. By luring Fortunato while he was drunk, nobody suspected that he would be seeking revenge on him. He did not threaten Fortunato so nobody would know to avenge Fortunato’s death afterwards.
