Chapter 1 Why are human relations skills so important? Goal of HR to create a win-win situation What is a win-win situation? occurs the organization and the employee get what they want Total Person Approach realize that an organization employees the whole person,not just his or her job skills Systems Effect all people in the organization are affected by least one other person, and each person affects the whole group or organization. Elton Mayo called the father of human relations. Hawthorne Effect refers to an increase in performance caused by special attention given to employees, rather than tangible in the work. Chapter 2 Locus of Control is a continuum representing one’s belief as to whether external or in- ternal forces control one’s destiny. Stress and some effects of stress stress is an emotional and/or physical reaction to en- vironmental activities and events. Empathy and why is it important? is the capacity to understand or feel what another being (a human or non-human animal) is experiencing from within the other being's frame of reference, i.e., the capacity to place oneself in another's position. Perception - how does it affect HR? perception refers to a person’s interpretation of re- ality. some of biases affecting perception are stereotypes, frame of reference, expecta- tions, selective exposure, interest, and projection. Chapter 3 Attitudes-how do they affect HR? attitude is a strong belief or feeling toward peo- ple, things, and situations. Values-how do they affect HR? Theory X/Theory Y attitudes hold that employees dislike work and must be closely su- pervised to get them to do their work/ attitudes hold that employee like to work and do not need to be closely supervised to get them to do their work.
