MEXICO’S GOVERNMENT STRUCTURE Mexico’s government structure Mexico is a federal republic, headed by a president. The government is divided into three distinct levels namely the federal union, state, and municipal governments. The federal union is further divided into three sub-branches namely the judiciary, legislature, and executive. The executive branch is composed of the head of state, who also serves as the commander-in-chief and in charge of making cabinet appointments. The head of state is voted in for a term of 6 years by the simple majority of the states and federal districts, and cannot be re-elected for a second term (n.a., 2014). There is also no vice president. The legislature is a bicameral Assembly divided into the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies that holds two sessions per year. Their major role is to make laws and regulations for the nation and approve national budgets and presidential appointments. During the congressional recess, a Permanent
