The study of individuals and groups in organizations. A body of knowledge that has special implications for the ways in which managers interact and manage employees to improve organizational performance. Organizations as open systems Managers in Organizations What Managers Do A manager (or administrator ) is someone who achieves goals through other people. The managerial activities are included: to make decisions, to allocate resources, and to direct activities of others to attain goals Task performance Human resource maintenance To manage performance: productivity is a summary measure of the quantity and quality of work performance achieved, which also accounts for resource use.

Organizational Behavior (OB) 4 June August 2016 version 5 Productivity and Managerial Performance (Effectiveness and efficiency) Four Functions of Management Planning is about: defining goals establishing strategies to achieve goals developing plans to coordinate activities Organising is determining: what tasks are to be done who is to do them how the tasks are to be grouped who reports to whom Leading (directing) includes: motivation employees directing others selecting the most effective communication channels resolving conflicts Controlling is: monitoring activities to ensure they are being accomplished as planned correcting any significant deviations Effective, but not efficient: Some resources wasted Neither effective nor efficient: Goals not achieved; resources wasted in the process Effective and efficient: Goals achieved and resources well used; area of high productivity Efficient but not effective: No wasted resources; but goals not achieved
