Emily Ryan English 2020 Washington Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle” (361-78). 10/08/2007 “Rip Van Winkle”: 1. What is Diedrich Knickerbocker’s occupation? Why is it important to this text? Diedrich Knickerbocker is a writer and a historian who wrote the stories about Rip Van Winkle and Sleepy Hollow. Because he is so interested in Dutch history, he incorporated some of the culture into this story. Also, because he is a historian, it seems that his historical facts in the stories he wrote were very accurate. 2. Compare/contrast attitudes toward the wilderness and nature in this text with attitudes in other texts we’ve read up to now. The attitude of nature in this story about Rip Van Winkle is much more positive than the other stories we have read. In those stories, the wilderness represented distance from God and evil. In the very beginning of “Rip Van Winkle,” mountains are described as beautiful and it is stated that they change often. Even more so, later in the story, they
