Emily Ryan Themes in Lit 2020 Bradstreet 09/14/2007 1. Imagine that Anne Bradstreet’s poem is a letter of application. Consider the following questions: what “position” is she applying for in her poem? To whom is she applying? How does she demonstrate her qualifications for the position? How does she show she’s a “good fit” for the company? How does she show she’ll be a “team player”? You might find it helpful to think about how you yourself have shaped a job letter or interview to appeal to a prospective employer’s vision of who can best fill open positions. Anne Bradstreet’s poem shows her writing skills and what she can do with them. She is applying for the position of a writer for what I guess is a newspaper. She shows how she can write things that are fact and true without “sugaring” the lines down. She also says that she cannot speak plainly like the “fluent sweet tongued Greek who lisped at first.” In the seventh section, she mentions that she is willing to let the men be the head of the company and tell her what to do.
