Emily Ryan Themes in Lit 2020 Wheatley 09/21/2007 1. Locate the literary aspects of Phillis Wheatley’s poem. Where do you find examples of simile, metaphor, symbol, irony, hyperbole, and/or allusion in her tribute to the Rev. George Whitefield? Choose three examples from the text and label them. Phillis Wheatley’s poem she uses the symbol of a setting sun to represent the death of Rev. George Whitefield in lines 9-10. She alludes to Selina Shirley Hastings when she mentions “Great Countess ,” in line 38. Wheatley uses a metaphor on line 15 when she says “And sails to Zion , through vast seas of day.” She uses figurative language to describe the people that listening to Whitefield’s every word by saying “He freely offer’d to the num’rous throng,/ that on his lips with list’ning pleasure hung. 2.
