Emily Ryan Themes in Lit 2020 Rowlandson II 09/19/2007 For Wednesday: 1. Find Rowlandson’s reference to the “vast and desolate Wilderness” and give the page number. Find and quote William Bradford’s use of the same phrase. Then describe some of the hardships she experiences in this strange place. How does she adapt to her captors and her captivity? How does she refuse to adapt? Rowlandson references the “vast and desolate Wilderness” on page 125. In William Bradford’s text, he mentions “vast ocean” and “desolate wilderness,” on page 82 and 83. Rowlandson, soon after mentioning the wilderness, talks about how her baby wouldn’t stop crying. When she finally was allowed to have the baby, she soothed it. This did not last long, because she couldn’t carry the baby for long before falling down. After the Indians put Rowlandson on the horse’s back, she fell off with the baby. The Indians laughed at her. She had to take care of her sick baby in the snow and nobody would help
